The long weekend coupled with the auspicious day of Dashera proved to be very fruitful for the white goods market in Ahmedabad. Not only sweet shops but also automobile showrooms were flooded with buyers on Monday, even as dealers of white goods enjoyed their share of the pie.

“This year, Dashera has been far better than last year. Compared to previous years, we are expecting our sales to rise by around 20 per cent. Over the entire festive season from Navratri to Diwali, we are expecting our turnover to increase by around 25 per cent compared to the same period last year,” said Sudhakaran Nair, DGM of Sales India.

The price of LCD televisions has also fallen drastically at this time. “Last year, the price of a 32-inch LCD television was around Rs45,000, but has fallen to around Rs32,000 this year. The fall in prices has led a lot of people to buy new LCD televisions on this auspicious day,” Nair said.

According to him, the maximum demand has been for LCD televisions this year. “Among all white goods, sales of LCD televisions have been the highest. We have also seen increased demand for refrigerators, washing machines, computers and digital cameras on Dashera. But, LCD televisions have been the favourite for all our customers, who came with their families,” Nair said.

One of the leading white goods brands in India, LG, also witnessed high demand for LCD televisions this year. “This Dashera, we are expecting a growth of more than 60 per cent in our sales compared to last year, which was a bit dull. Among all white goods, we have seen maximum demand for LCD televisions and slims TVs, followed by refrigerators, microwave ovens and other products,” said Maulesh Chhaya, regional manager for Gujarat, MP and Chhattisgarh, LG. This festive season, LG is expecting a growth of more than 35 per cent in its sales compared to last year, he said.

It was also noticed that customers preferred this auspicious day to purchase white goods. “We were planning to buy a washing machine, but we delayed doing so till Dashera,” said Prakash Jani, a resident of Sola Road.
