The recent heavy rains have taken their toll with nine more rain related deaths in Bhuj. The nine deaths were registered on a single day, taking the total death in the district to 20 in a week. No other district has reported such high number of rain-related deaths. The number of deaths is highest in the eastern part of Kutch, with most of the victims being children.

While Bhuj reported a rainfall of 57ml on Thursday, which is the highest in the district, the rest of the places like Mandvi, Anjar, Gandhidham, Nakhatrana, Nalia talukas received scanty rainfall and there was no rainfall in Bhachau, Rapar, Lakhapat and Mundra. However, Mandvi has so far received the highest rainfall this season. The ancient port city recorded more than 35 inches of rainfall on Monday and Tuesday. The Babawadi area here has residential bungalows of former chief minister Suresh Mehta and top BJP leader Aanant Dave.

Social worker and veteran journalist Dhirubhai Shah told DNA on Thursday that the high figure of rainfall was misleading. He said the rain gauge at the Mandvi municipality, the Gujarat Maritime Board and Mamlatdar's office gave different figures of the rainfall. He said, "While the figure given by the GMB office of Mandvi which has electronic rain guage showed 914 ml of rainfall, the one at the Vivekanand Research and Training Institute recorded the rainfall at 756ml. No agency could give a satisfactory explanation regarding this variation in the measurement of rainfall in a single day".

Additional collector Gunvant Waghela described the deaths due to the rainfall unfortunate and appealed to parents, not to let their children wander near any waterbody.
