Income Tax raids on properties of Jharkhand's former chief minister Madhu Koda in connection with alleged hawala transactions and illegal investments, continued for the third day today.

"Koda is at his residence here and raids and questioning are continuing," a senior IT official told PTI. He refused to comment whether Income Tax department would move Interpol to facilitate investigation into alleged hawala transactions in the wake of the department claiming of unearthing documents that suggested he had allegedly sent Rs 560 crore abroad.

The IT had on Saturday claimed that it had got evidence of Rs2000 crore hawala transactions and illegal investments by Koda and his associates.

Searches were conducted at 70 premises of Koda and his associates in Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Lucknow, Nasik, Ranchi, Chaibasa and Jamshedpur in the wake of allegations that he had amassed illegal wealth during his tenure as chief minister and minister for mines.

Enforcement Directorate also interrogated alleged hawala operators Arvind Vyas and Lalit Jain as raids continued across the country. Koda, who represented Jagganathpur assembly segment from 2000 to 2009 before entering Lok Sabha from Singhbhum, comes from a place rich in iron ore and most of the findings, as claimed by the IT Department, deal with mining.

Koda first got embroiled in a controversy for his alleged association with Vinod Kumar Sinha and had encountered a hostile opposition on the floor stalling house proceedings for three days in 2007. As a chief minister then, he ignored the opposition demand for a CBI probe into alleged corruption surrounding Sinha.

In November 2008, one Durga Oraon filed a PIL in Jharkhand High Court seeking a CBI probe into the moveable and immoveable assets of Koda and several of his colleagues in his former cabinet. On December 15, high court directed Income Tax department to file a status report.

The high Court is also hearing a PIL alleging misuse of state helicopter between April 2005 and March 2008 allegedly by some former chief ministers, ex-ministers and their relatives.
