Taking local police by surprise, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi today made a surprise visit to Chennai to take part in a party function.

Making the unannounced visit, Gandhi arrived by a scheduled private flight at 1:50pm to take part in a Youth Congress training session on the city's outskirts as part of his efforts to strengthen the party at the grassroots.

Even the airport police were not informed of the visit. Without any formal reception at the airport, Gandhi got into a bulletproof car, kept ready inside the airport, and left for Thangavel College of Engineering at Thuraipakkam with Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president KV Thangkabalu.

During the training session, he asked the party cadre to work hard and reach out to the people so that more youths join the organisation, a party source said.

Gandhi said suitable posts would be given to those who work responsibly for the party's growth in their respective regions.

After interacting with the office-bearers, the Congress leader left for Delhi.

Last September, Gandhi had made a three-day visit to the state as part of his efforts to strengthen the party.
