The Punjab government has ordered strict directions to stop prevent honour killings in the state, an official spokesperson said today.
Fresh directions and guidelines have been sent to all deputy commissioners, magistrates and senior superintendents and commissioners of police for strict compliance in this regard, he said today.
Cases of threats to young couples prompting them to live separately would be strictly dealt and action would be taken against the guilty, the spokesperson said.
Directions have been also issued that false cases should not be registered on behalf of the parents/relatives against such couples who are adults and can take their own decisions, the spokesperson said.
Police, however, have been asked to strictly handle those cases where the couples are minors, he added.
Protection Centres have been set up to provide young married couples with boarding and lodging facilities for a period of six weeks after their marriage, he said.
Such couples would be given protection after they submitted an application in the court of district registrar, while the SSP concerned would ensure adequate security to them.
Gram panchayats in villages and special cells in the cities would counsel both the newly married couples and their parents/relatives to help them reconcile, he said.
Compulsory registration of all marriages is also under active consideration of the government. Fresh guidelines in this regard had been given after the directions of the Punjab and Haryana high court in the CWP Asha v/s State of Haryana and others regarding honour killing, he said.
