Punjab-based duo held with contraband in Jammu & Kashmir

A man and a woman from Punjab were arrested here today for allegedly possessing 23 kg of narcotic substance, a police spokesman said.

Jasminder Kaur and Harbinder Singh, both residents of Hoshiarpur in Punjab, were arrested from city gate Pantha chowk on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway.

The duo was smuggling the contraband, a type of cannabis known as 'Fuki' in local parlance, from Kashmir to Punjab, the spokesman said, adding a case under Narcotics, Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) was registered against them.

With their arrest, a total of five Punjab residents have been arrested for carrying the contraband in the past 20 days. On November 25, Gurnam Singh Balkhar and his sister Manjir Kaur were held from Pantha chowk, and 30 kg of Fuki was recovered from them.

On December 8, police arrested Gurpreet Singh of Punjab with 18 kg of poppy at Jajjar Kotli in Jammu.
