The state government on Thursday signed an agreement with Himalaya Herbal Healthcare. According to the agreement, prisoners charged with minor offences and who have shown good behaviour will get a chance to rebuild their lives by cultivating medicinal herbs for Himalaya Herbal Healthcare.

As part of Himalaya’s corporate social responsibility initiative, the programme is aimed at skills development and employment opportunities for prisoners, and will help them learn something new and lead a livelihood after they get released from jail. Prisoners will be paid ¤50 for six hours of work. They will use modern technology for farming.

Phase 1 of the project will be undertaken in the open air prison in Avathi village in Devanahalli taluk. The cultivation of herbs will be carried out in one or two acres. Himalaya will provide seeds, technical assistance, and training to prisoners. Once the project becomes successful, Himalaya will explore expanding its scope to other prisoners in the state.

The project will start off by cultivating Alfalfa herbs. These herbs will be used for treating patients suffering from menopause discomfort, cancer, and cholesterol. “This approach will motivate a better sense of responsibility. It will help prisoners build their self-esteem. With the right kind of support and encouragement, we can reinstate them,” said additional director general of police (prisons) Kuchanna Srinivas.

“We never give prisoners a chance to rehabilitate. Himalaya’s corporate social responsibility programme focuses on reaching out to the underprivileged sections of the society through livelihood development. That is why when the state government approached us with this proposal, we were excited. This project will give prisoners an opportunity to earn a decent income and acquire new skills,” said Dr Babu, head of Agrotech department, Himalaya.
