Ahmedabad municipal school board's attempt to gauge the depth of primary school teacher's knowledge about the subjects ended in a fiasco on Saturday. Nearly four thousand teachers boycotted the examination conducted by the school board on Saturday doubting the education body's aim behind conducting such exams. However, the school board's administrative officer claimed that teachers' appeared for their exams.

Ahmedabad municipal school board had intimated the municipal primary school teachers regarding the examination about three months back. Though the teachers' union had opposed the decision in writing, the school board did not review its decision. "In the city's west zone, the teachers did not even enter the examination hall," said a source from school board.

"Out of total 3,979 teachers, 3,364 teachers were present in the examination on Saturday and the remaining were absent due to various reasons," said Lagdhir Desai, administrative officer of Ahmedabad municipal school board. He added that the examination was conducted with an aim of testing the teachers' knowledge so that orientation could be conducted for improvement in level of education in the civic schools.

According to sources, though teachers in most of the examination centre's appeared for their exam, they left the answer-sheets blank. "We doubt the intention of the school board behind conducting the examination. If the media reports are to be believed, the school board conducted the examination to fix the teacher, which was not acceptable to us," said Rajendra Patel, president of Ahmedabad Municipal Shikshak Mandal.  The union wanted the school board to take separate examinations for principals, teachers of lower primary and higher primary classes.

Expressing his ignorance about the teachers' decision to boycott the exam, Desai said that the school board will have a talk with teachers' union in case of boycott.
