Pre-monsoon rains cool Delhi

Pre-monsoon showers cooled Delhi today, giving residents a much-awaited relief.

The temperature, which was hovering around the high 30s yesterday, plunged to 26 degrees Celsius at 10.30am following the rains. However, the MeT department said the rains were not monsoon showers and that the monsoon is expected to hit the capital only next week.

The night temperature also settled at a comfortable 25.5 C against 30.5 degrees yesterday.

Palam recorded an overnight rainfall of 29.9 mm, followed by Ayanagar 21.5 mm, Lodhi road 16.4 mm, Safdarjung 15.9 mm and Ridge area 1.8 mm.

The national capital faced scorching heat for most parts of June when it recorded a monthly rainfall deficit of -19%.

The Met department earlier said that monsoon missed the onset date of June 29. Last year, the monsoon had reached the city on June 30.

The earliest onset of monsoon over Delhi during the past 30 years was on June 15, 2008.

The showers provided the citizens a perfect Sunday.

"Finally, the rains arrived, bringing relief from heat. Today being a Sunday I plan to go out with my family in the evening and hope that the weather will remain pleasant throughout the day," said Sakshar, an MNC employee.
