The riot victims of Gomatipur are still waiting to get Central government compensation, courtesy the mamlatdar office and postal department. In many cases, the compensation cheques are sent at wrong addresses, so postmen do not deliver cheques to the victims even though the latter come up with identity proofs, copies of FIR and proofs of compensation received from the state government.

This has prompted the Congress corporators from Gomatipur, Iqbal Sheikh and Dahyabhai Parmar, to file a complaint with the senior superintendent of posts.
More than 1,800 riot victims in Gomatipur have not received cheques of compensation due to wrong address quoted by the city mamlatdar office.

The corporators have alleged that the postmaster of Gomatipur post office and three postmen deliver cheques only if the victim is ready to offer bribe.

Vahid Ahmed Sheikh, a resident of Ahmedi Society in Gomatipur, was not given cheque as the address was that of Salatwado. "In the survey of riot-affected, my address is of Ahmedi Society. However, the envelope posted by the mamlatdar office gave a Salatwado address; so the postman refused to deliver the cheque to me," said Vahid Ahmed. All proofs of identity and residence were given, but to no avail, he said.

"The envelope remained undelivered for two months; only when a representation was made by the local corporators, the cheques were returned to the mamlatdar office," said Sheikh.

"It seems that the mamlatdar office thinks that all riot victims in Gomatipur are living in Salatwado only," said Jahur Sandhi, a resident of Sutharwado, whose cheque was posted on address of Salatwado.

"We have given a written complaint to the PMG and superintendent of posts. However, no action has been taken yet," said Iqbal Sheikh.

A registered letter should be returned to the sender if it is not delivered within a week. However, in case of riot victims, envelopes carrying cheques of compensation were not returned for months. The postmen and the postmaster would deliver the cheques only if they were contacted by the victims through touts, said Parmar.

When contacted, deputy superintendent of posts, Ahmedabad division, CH Prajapati, said: "The assistant superintendent of post, IG Vora, is looking into the complaint filed by the corporators of Gomatipur."
