Karanj police on Tuesday arrested an agent of the General Post Office (GPO) for allegedly duping around 12 people of over Rs8 lakh.

The accused, identified as Jignesh Rami, a resident of Astodia, used to allegedly withdraw money from the accounts of depositors at the GPO by tricking them into giving their signatures on several documents.

Jignesh was an agent who dealt with opening accounts under the Monthly Income Scheme run by the GPO. Police sources said that Jignesh would allegedly take signatures of the depositors on several documents on the pretext of opening an account under the scheme. He would then reportedly use these signed documents to withdraw money.

Police have also arrested Jignesh's parents, Pravin and Gunvanti Rami for involvement in the scam. The scam was brought to light last week after about 12 depositors registered complaints against Jignesh.

“The main accused Jignesh was arrested on Tuesday. His parents who were accomplices in the scam have also been arrested,” said Karanj police inspector KS Sawani.

“The public relations officer at GPO has alleged that around five to six people from the GPO may be involved in the scam,” said sources.
