On Monday when Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati indulged in an ostentatious rally to mark the BSP’s 25th anniversary, political parties across the spectrum joined hands to slam her government in Lok Sabha over the deteriorating law and order situation in curfew-hit Bareilly.

In a combined attack on the BSP supremo’s government, leaders from the Samajwadi Party (SP), BJP, Congress and JD(U) joined hands and sought the Centre’s intervention to restore order in UP’s riot-hit district. Raising the issue during the Zero Hour, SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said, “The law and order situation in Bareilly is deteriorating and the state government is busy spending state resources to hold rallies. Children are suffering because of the violence and curfew, which has been in force for the last 14 days — the longest time curfew has been imposed on a city. The Centre must intervene.”

Sensing another opportunity to reach out to the Muslim vote bank after his apparent failure to do so over the Women’s Reservation Bill, Yadav said, “In such incidents, it is the Muslims who suffer most damage to life and property. The government must ensure their safety.”

The BJP too condemned the state government’s alleged failure in checking the violence. Party leader Maneka Gandhi made an aggressive appeal to check the “misrule of the Mayawati government”.

“Children are punished for throwing colours on a poster during Holi, but there’s no punishment for those beating up women, plundering and disturbing law and order. I want a judicial inquiry [into the Bareilly violence]. The Centre should step in and solve the problem,” Gandhi said, adding, “It is not only about Bareilly. It is about Uttar Pradesh, the heart of India. We have to wake up now.”

Not willing to cede any political edge to the BJP and SP in UP, where it gained lost ground in last year’s general elections, the Congress too raised the pitch against the incumbent UP government.

Congress MP from Domariyaganj Jagdambika Pal too slammed Mayawati for her government’s “complicity” in fuelling the violence and asked for the Centre’s immediate intervention.
