It seems a monthly bribe (hafta) of Rs3 lakh allegedly paid to the Ahmedabad police is what helped bootleggers like Yogendrasinh Chauhan alias Daddu Chhara to smoothly run his liquor business.  Daddu allegedly bribed the cops to help him deliver the liquor from Mahemdabad to Ahmedabad.

The money was allegedly distributed to Kagdapith police, Vatva police, Danilimda police, Prevention of Crime Branch (PCB) -commissioner’s office and officials in the Ahmedabad Crime Branch. Sources in the police department told DNA that Daddu had begun delivering country made liquor at various ‘desi stands’ in Kantodiavaas some few months ago.

The operation commenced after a deal was struck between Vahivatdaars of Kagdapith police station, Ranjitsinh Dabhi and Baldevsinh and Daddu. Daddu allegedly paid Rs1 lakh to the Kagdapith police station to deliver around 2,000 litres of country made liquor in Kantodiavaas.

“The liquor was brought in plastic cans or Kerba in auto rickshaws and scooters,” the source said.  The other agencies, which were on Daddu’s payroll, were PCB and the crime branch.  “An amount of Rs25,000 was paid to PCB while around Rs50,000 was paid to the Vahivatdaars of both these agencies,” a police source said. Apart from that the Vahivatdaars of ACP and deputy commissioner of police were paid around Rs50,000 by Daddu to deliver the deadly liquor.

Danilimda and Vatva police stations were the two areas that Daddu had to cross while bringing his consignment from Mahemdabad. “The deal to pay them Rs35,000 per month, just to allow his liquor bound vehicles to pass through their jurisdiction was settled by Daddu,” a police source said.
