Do not be surprised if you see a counsellor helping out a woman at a police station when she walks in to file a complaint. In a bid to help victims of violence who want to file a complaint when they reach the police station, plans are on to form a 'counselling committee'.

Sources said that this committee will comprise of members of NGOs and police personnel. The objective of the committee will be to counsel women who are victims so that they are able to file a complaint in the police station.

Sources said that it is planned that the committee will work across all districts. Talking to DNA, DGP SS Khandwawala said, "The committee will have sufficient members and will help women who come with various problems to the police station." Khandwawala said that a unique helpline for women is also in the pipeline. It is planned that the helpline will cater exclusively to women. Sources said that the number of the helpline will also be in place very soon.
Officials added that the committee will also make an effort so that things don't deteriorate to an extent that a criminal complaint is filed.

Khandwawala said that the new approach adopted by the department was a new one and will help women immensely. It is worthy to note that a lot of women who are victims of violence are often unable to file a complaint as there is no counselling done at the right time.

Meera Mehta Malik, a representative of Stree Hinsa Nivaran Manch, a network of NGOs working on women related issues says, "The problem faced by women is not merely individual but also social. We welcome the move to start off such a committee." She also said that the network of NGOs had sent its members to the Tata Institute of Social Sciences to be trained as counsellors earlier.
