Following the hooch tragedy in Ahmedabad, the state police have taken stringent action against country liquor hubs across the state.

In the last few days, the state police have arrested thousands of bootleggers involved in manufacturing and supplying liquor.

The stringent action is a result of orders by the state officials. Local police officials have activated their informer network to trace all liquor hubs being operated in different nooks and corners of the city. The emphasis is on getting as much information as possible, due to which there has been a sharp rise in the reward money given by police to informers.

After raiding a large number of places where country brew was suspected to be sold or manufactured, the city police are now putting a premium on collecting information about country liquor vends. Police officials are ready to pay higher reward than earlier to their informers. They want information about the smallest country liquor hub operating in their area.

As a result, reward money for informers has seen a hike of about 150%. According to a police source, while information about a country liquor joint would earlier fetch a reward of upto Rs100, it has now gone up to Rs250, though there is no fixed rate as such. The reward money is the highest in last two decades, say these sources.

According to sources, the reward for information about country liquor has crossed the reward for info on Indian-Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL). But again, the reward varies on the size of the liquor hub about which information has been given.

The sources said that after the hooch tragedy, citizens are coming up to police with information about liquor hubs in and around their area. In the wake of the tragedy, people feel that it is their duty to inform police about the illegal sale of liquor in their area.
