Police rescue kidnapped youth in Manipur

The son of the Lamlai local CPI secretary Y Megha who was kidnapped by militants was rescued safe and unharmed from a house at Samurou area in Manipur's Imphal West district, official sources said today.

The sources said that 23-year-old Y Manaoba, the son of CPI leader Y. Megha was kidnapped by militants of the Kangleipak Communist Party-Military Council (City Meitei faction) from Lamlai area on July 16.

After the kidnap, the militants rang up Megha, who is a close friend of health minister and senior CPI leader Ph Parijat, and demanded ten per cent contract work and 10 government jobs at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Science if he wanted to see his son alive, the sources said.

Megha appealed to the militants to release his son as he was not in a position to give contract work or make appointments.

The sources said after receiving specific information, Manaoba was rescued by a police team led by additional superintendent of police (Imphal West), RK Jhaljit yesterday from the house at Samurou area.

The police arrested the owner of the house.

The sources said the Manipur health minister gave Rs20,000 to the police personnel who rescued Manaoba.

On July 19, suspected militants had kidnapped two children from the Lamlai area from where Manaoba was abducted.

The children, however, escaped on July 21.
