A van belonging to Sabarmati police was damaged on Monday night after cops tried to stop a garba function which exceeded curfew limits in Ranip.

People pelted stones at the van and police had to call for reinforcements to bring the situation under control. Nine people were arrested including one Ganpat Vaghela.

A garba function was being held at Jawahar Municipal Quarters in Ranip on Monday evening. One Naresh Khoda had taken permission to hold the garba till 10 pm. However, people continued to dance even after that. Meanwhile, some neighbours, who were disturbed by the loud music, informed the police control room.

Sabarmati police, headed by ASI Rameshchandra Ramsagar, reached the spot and asked the people to wind up the event. They agreed but as soon as the cops left, they resumed their dancing.

The police were called again and this time they got into a scuffle with the dancing crowd. However, the agitated public pelted stones at the police van. The cops had to flee the spot and Ramsagar called up senior officials who brought the miscreants to book.
