PM, Prez among leaders condoling Yash Chopra's death

Chopra was a versatile film-maker and his demise was a great loss for the Indian film industry, Pranab Mukherjee said in his condolence message.

President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and a large number of political leaders on Sunday condoled the death of veteran film-maker Yash Chopra, while describing him as an iconic personality and a creative genius.

Chopra was a versatile film-maker and his demise was a great loss for the Indian film industry, Pranab Mukherjee said in his condolence message.

The prime minister said he was an "icon of Indian cinema" who entertained many generations with his rare creativity. "He will be remembered by millions of his fans around the world and his work as a director and producer will be treasured by the nation for many generations," said PM Manmohan Singh in his message.

While Vice-President Hamid Ansari said "his valuable contribution to Hindi cinema and the wholesome entertainment his films gave us will be long remembered", BJP President Nitin Gadkari described the famed filmmaker as the doyen of the Indian film industry.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni said in Chopra's death, the Indian cinema had lost one of its iconic personalities and a creative genius. "His idea of portraying love as the essence of life and relationships will be fondly remembered by all movie lovers. His death is a void which will be difficult to fill," she said.

Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah said in Yash Chopra's demise, the state had lost its best envoy of its scenic beauty. "He was the best envoy of our state's natural beauty in the rest of the country and he always advocated Kashmir as a destination for shooting to many film-makers," added Abdullah.

Yash Chopra, known as Hindi cinema's "king of romance" who made many memorable films, died in Mumbai following dengue infection and multiple-organ failure.

Further, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee condoled the filmmaker's death, saying that she knew him personally. "I feel very sad to know about the sudden death of Yash Chopra, internationally famous film personality. I used to know him personally," she said in a message.

Meanwhile, NRI industrialist Lord Swraj Paul also condoled the death of iconic film-maker, saying  his demise "is a great loss not only to India but to the entire global film fraternity". In a condolence message to Mrs Pamela Chopra, Lord Paul said: "Yash Chopra, popularly known as King of Romance brought joy to millions of people all over the world with his romantic films. His death is a great loss to India and the film world."
