Umed Singh, husband of slain bandit-turned-politician Phoolan Devi, has deposed before a Delhi court and identified key accused Sher Singh Rana as a regular visitor to their official residence here.

"Uma Kashyap used to come with accused Sher Singh Rana, present in the court, (correctly identified) at official residence of my wife Phoolan Devi at 44, Ashoka Road here," Umed Singh told Additional Sessions Judge S C Rajan.

Singh, deposing as 160th prosecution witness in the eight-year-old murder case, said Kalicharan, personal secretary of his wife, had told him that Rana had shot at the Samajwadi Party MP outside her residence here.

"I came to know from Kalicharan, on the night when we received the dead body, that the person, who used to visit our house with Uma Kashyap had committed the murder of Phoolan," the witness said. Singh, a builder by profession, said he was at Kashmere Gate when Phoolan was killed on July 25, 2001, and was informed by Kalicharan about the incident.

Rana used to introduce himself as Pankaj at the time of his visit to our residence, he said. On conclusion of the recording of his testimony, the court adjourned the hearing to September 16.

Rana, along with 11 others, allegedly conspired and killed Phoolan Devi in Delhi on July 25 in 2001 to avenge the 1981 Behmai massacre in which she killed 17 people of Thakur community.

Out of 12 accused, Keshav Chauhan, Amit Rathi and Praveen Mittal have been granted bail in the case. Earlier, the court dismissed the bail plea of Rana, saying enough evidence has come on record against him.

It was alleged that Rana and others had deliberately kept alive a criminal case at Haridwar to create evidence that they were not in Delhi on the day when Phoolan was assassinated.
