Terming alleged phone tapping of political leaders as reminiscent of the emergency, BJP in Punjab today said party workers and leaders are prepared to go to jails over the issue.

"Our party leaders and workers will not allow the fascist mindset of UPA reflected in tapping of phones...it refreshes memories of the black days of emergency...we are prepared to go to jails against the UPA's action," senior BJP leader and incharge of the party's affairs in Punjab Balbir Punj told reporters in Chandigarh.

Strongly denouncing both the Congress and Left parties for the wiretapping allegations after the IPL controversy surfaced, the party Rajya Sabha MP said, "Such a move when Parliament session is underway will derail the entire proceedings of the House."

A prominent English news weekly had claimed that the phones of Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar, Digvijay Singh, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar and CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat were tapped, prompting the opposition to slam the government over the allegations.

On the IPL controversy, Punj said, "It is the biggest scandal of the 21st century. Through the IPL, hawala money is being routed by bad elements into the country...it has become a channel for funding anti-national and terrorist actions."

Demanding a thorough probe into it by a joint Parliamentary committee, he said, "IPL chief Lalit Modi is just a symptom of underlying cancer."

Showering praise over the ruling SAD-BJP alliance in Punjab for bringing about peace and communal harmony in the border state, Punj said the combine is the "best example" of Hindu-Sikh unity in the country.

He sought to play down the alleged differences within Punjab unit of the BJP saying, it is the democratic right of ministers and MLAs to rake up issues of public interest.

He said BJP president Nitin Gadkari will address a rally in the city on May 12 and meet party leaders from Punjab and Chandigarh on May 13.

Earlier, Punj, accompanied by another party leader Kiran Ghai, welcomed former Union minister Harmohan Dhawan into the BJP fold.

Dhawan had recently joined the party in Delhi in the presence of Gadkari.
