After Union home minister P Chidambaram threatened People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with strong action on Sunday for showing parts of J&K in China in a powerpoint presentation, party president Mehbooba Mufti hit back on Monday.

She said New Delhi was frightened of and bullied by China, which is occupying more and more land in Ladakh.

“I have high regards for the home minister but I would request him that our leadership in Delhi should be more concerned about the incursions made by China every year. I somehow feel people in Delhi are frightened of China. It would be better they do not get bullied by China, which I feel they are, and that is why they do not want to face the reality,” Mehbooba said

She had given a powerpoint presentation during a press conference on Saturday about PDP’s vision and in one of the slides titled ‘Make J&K free economic zone’, showed the map of the state in three colours — red for the part occupied by China, green for PoK and yellow for this part of J&K.

“We have shown J&K boundaries as they existed before 1947. This is the reason we pointed out area under China in the map. When we talk of area under Pakistan’s occupation, they [Centre] feel happy and when we talk of area under Chinese occupation they are scared. That is why Biejing is occupying more and more land in Ladakh. Irony is that instead of being happy, the leaders in Delhi are worried about China getting annoyed,” she said.

Mehbooba also hit out at Delhi for not doing enough to rein in China over the visa issue.

She invoked the names of Indira Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee saying they would have appreciated PDP for showing that China has occupied our land.
Meanwhile in New Delhi, emphasising that it was “using modest and moderate” language, Congress demanded that PDP withdraw its controversial J&K map.

“This kind of pictorial misadventurism has political and diplomatic implications,” party spokesperson Manish Tewari said.

He reminded Mehbooba that the national consensus and the will of the people was adequately reflected in the unanimous resolution of parliament passed in February 1994.

“There is no need for anyone to create an unnecessary controversy on such a sensitive issue,” he said.
