Patrolling intensified on Dholka-Bagodara highway in Gujarat

Cops finally woke up to the danger of travelling on the accident-prone Dholka-Bagodara Highway on Friday following the road mishap which killed 18 pilgrims in the wee hours of Thursday.

Apart from Ahmedabad rural police, the state traffic branch officials have also started patrolling the route in an effort to prevent any such incident in the future.

A speeding truck had mowed down 18 pilgrims who were resting while on their way to attend the Urs fair at a dargah in Bhadiyad village in Dholka on Thursday. According to police, it was one of the biggest accidents the city has witnessed in the recent past.

The records of accidents occurring in the district also reveal sordid tales of how people are frequently being killed in the region. The data compiled at the district superintendent of police's (DSP) office, says that in the last 18 months, 640 people have been killed in accidents while 1910 have been injured.

In 2010, a total of 467 people got killed while in 2011, till the month of May, 183 died. Around two months ago, the district police had figured out around 100 points in the district where mishaps commonly take place.

"We have increased police presence on the route to avoid repetition of similar accidents. We have deployed four patrolling squads with loudspeakers on the route which will be looking after the pilgrims," said DySP MM Malik.

He further said that apart from police, the Central Urs committee has also deployed a couple of vehicles to check the flow the pilgrims on the highway. Also, patrolling squads of state traffic branch have taken guard on the route from Friday. The patrolling will continue till the fair comes to an end.
