Agitated parents attacked a state-run school after a sting by a news channel showed one of its teachers forcing girl students to act in pornographic films.
NEW DELHI: Hundreds of angry parents damaged public vehicles and hurled stones at a state-run school here on Thursday after a TV sting showed one of its teachers allegedly forcing girl students into prostitution.
A mob of at least 300 people went on a rampage at the Daryaganj branch of the Government Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya after the sting aired on a Hindi news channel showed teacher Uma Khurana forcing girl students into prostitution and to act in pornographic films.
Parents and residents of the area protested outside the school against the alleged porn racket. The school subsequently suspended Khurana, who was later detained by the police. The violence, however, did not stop.
Protestors could be heard shouting ‘We will kill her’ and ‘Let us decide the punishment for Khurana’. “Both my daughters study in this school. We want the police to hand over Khurana to us. We will do justice ourselves,” said Khalida Anjum, a parent.
“We send our children to school with the confidence that they are safe with the teachers. This school has around 2,000 girl pupils. Is this how they protect our girls? We want Khurana’s head,” said HM Akbar Ansari, another parent.
The mob set a police vehicle on fire; pelted stones on the vehicles parked near the school and smashed the window panes of the school building. Several people, including two policemen, were injured in the clash.
The police had to resort to lathi charge and tear gas shelling to disperse the mob. Additional police personnel have been deployed in the area to avoid another agitation.
“We have detained the teacher and are investigating the matter. Khurana worked with the Vivek Vihar branch of the school earlier and had joined this branch only a month back. Her residence was close to the school in Vivek Vihar and she also gave private tuitions to girls from the school,” said a police official.
According to sources, Khurana drugged the students who came to her for tuitions and shot pornographic clips featuring them. “She also forced them into prostitution,” the source added. The police will soon ask the television channel to hand over the sting operation tapes for further investigation. What also remains to be established is the time when this sting was conducted.
Meanwhile, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and Delhi Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely, have both ordered separate inquiries. “It is a shocking case of child abuse and should be investigated thoroughly. All those involved in this scandal must be brought to book,” said Sandhya Bajaj, a member of the commission.
