Terror threat from Pakistan is alive and kicking and is projected to grow even more as its civil government loses out control over governance in major regions which are being taken over by the terrorist groups.

The fear of building up of such a scenario found reflection in prime minister Manmohan Singh’s speech on Friday which he gave at the annual conference of Director Generals of Police.

“...There is no room for complacency on the security front in the state. There are reports of cross-border camps of terrorists being reactivated, and of attempts to induct fresh batches of militants into the country. We need to ensure that such attempts are foiled through smooth and coordinated functioning of all security agencies working in the state,” Singh said.

Adding up to prime minister’s apprehensions, sources in intelligence set up portrayed a dismal scenario of Pakistan as its civilian government continues to crumble and reduce in both size and stature.  “The space created by the government’s reduced

role is being occupied by the terrorist groups handled by the Inter State Services, particularly the Lashkar-e-Taiba. The dangerous sign is that the Pakistan’s Army is not reacting to it,” said a senior official.

To give credence to their apprehensions they cite example of US operation in Abbotabad undertaken to kill Osama bin Laden following which Pakistani Army did not defend its position openly. Cumulative intelligence inputs warn of a build up of about 2,500 terrorists in terror camps across the Line of Control in PoK waiting to be pushed into India with the help of Pakistani Army.

Officials in the security establishment believe that in the coming months engagement with Pakistani government is going to become less important and with it India will have to scale up its security defences.
