Udgam School for Children in the city has taken an initiative to insure the health of its over 2,000 students. As per the policy the school has bought from a private insurance company, each of the school's students is now insured for Rs1.5 lakh against health problems.

The policy, given by Cholamandalam MS General Insurance Company, has also been customised for the school. Accordingly, in addition to the health cover, each student will have a personal accident cover against accidental death, accidental permanent total disability, and accidental permanent partial disability.

As far as premium for the policy is concerned, the school administration will pay Rs3 lakh a year. School executive director Manan Choksi said that the initiative was a thoughtful decision.

"The whole idea is to follow the Supreme Court's guidelines in which the apex court has directed school managements to subscribe to group insurance to ensure that children are covered against any unfortunate incident,'' he said.

According to Kirit Acharya, principal officer of Madhuvan Insurance Grouping Services Pvt Ltd, the insurance doesn't cost more than Rs50 a year per student for health coverage of Rs1 lakh to Rs1.5 lakh. "It's a special policy which covers personal accident and health insurance of the students,'' he said.

The school is also tying up with Shalby Hospital for medical services for its students and their parents, teachers and the administrative staff. The facilities provided by the hospital include indoor patient treatment for multi-specialty and advanced emergency medical assistance. After Udgam School's initiative, some schools in the city are toying with the idea of going for health insurance for students.

"Anything for the welfare of students is welcome. But we need to ensure that such efforts don't put additional pressure on parents. Many households have some sort of insurance, yet at times some schools make efforts to churn out money," said principal of a well-known school in the city
