Over 100 persons in east Delhi were today hospitalised as they fell ill after consuming food articles made of contaminated buck wheat with police warning residents not to buy the article from open sacks.

Scores of people in Nandnagri, Gokalpuri, Jagatpuri, Gandhinagar, Kalyanpuri, Trilokpuri and Chilla Gaon were affected and started being admitted at various hospitals from morning.

It all started at 7am when patients complaining of vomitting, stomach ache, diarrhoea, and dizziness started pouring in at different hospitals including Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital and Dr Hedgewar Hospital.

Police have detained some people in connection with the incident.

"Nandu Masala Mill in Rajasthan's Mandoli is found to be the manufacturer of the kuttu flour (buck wheat) consumed by the victims. Some persons have been detained in this connection. Raids are being conducted," Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said.

Delhi Government has also ordered a probe into the incident.

A doctor at Lal Bahdur Shastri hospital said, "Nearly 35 people have been admitted since morning in our hospital. All have been diagnosed with food poisoning. None of them is serious. We have discharged a few of them."

Since we are running short of beds we have reffered some to GTB and other hospitals.

Meanwhile, 40 persons, each with the same complaints, are undergoing treatment at GTB hospital and Dr Hedgewar Hospital.

"After inquring from patients we found that all have consumed food made from buck wheat as this is a compulsary ritual for the Navratra festival that is going one," a doctor with GTB hospital said.

Bhagat said the victims have been found to have purchased the buck wheat from open sacks in retail.

"People are advised to check the expiry date of the packet containing Kuttu flour and the name of flour mills before using it. People are also advised not to purchase kuttu flour from open sacks," Bhagat said.

The district administration and emergency services have been alerted and teams of Food and Adulteration Department have also been pressed into service, he added.
