Consumption of contaminated water claimed the life of one Kalidas Rana, a resident of Kalupur, where around 17 new cases of gastroenteritis were reported on Saturday. With this death the toll from gastroenteritis goes up to two.

Residents of the walled city area have been complaining of contamination in water during summer. They say their complaint in the central zone office of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has not been addressed and their problems remain unheard.

The result is that dozens of gastroenteritis cases are reported after consuming contaminated water. Leader of opposition in AMC and Kalupur corporator Surendra Baxi said that it is because of negligence of AMC officials that people are losing life.

"The complaint of contaminated water is not new. The issue has also been raised a couple of times in the zero hour of the standing committee meeting. But AMC officials do nothing to solve the denizens' problems," he said.

In addition, areas like Shah Mill also receive contaminated water. Gyasuddin Sheikh, MLA from Shahpur said that Shahpur Mill compound area has been receiving contaminated water and cases of gastroenteritis have been increasing.
