One person got hurt when an ancient three-storey building built some 125 years ago and located at Dev ni Sheri in Mandavi ni Pol of Khadia collapsed on Saturday. The civic body had already served notice to its owners as the rickety building was unfit for human habitation.
Ramilaben Mehta, 60 years, went to the first floor on Saturday only to collapse in a heap with the debris as the floor gave way. Thankfully, Mehta escaped with bruises and minor cuts. The residents informed the police and the fire officials along with officials of estate and town development officials of AMC. “We had issued notice to the owners to either repair or demolish the building as it was found to be in precarious condition. Moreover, the department had also brought down second and third floor of the building couple of days back,” said Nilesh Baranda, deputy estate officer of estate and town development officer of AMC’s central zone.
Like hundreds of such other old buildings that dot the walled city limits, ownership disputes led to the dilapidated condition of the building which is jointly owned by five people. “We had tried to repair the building earlier but other owners created hurdles and also threatened to file police complaints,” alleged Nevil Shah, one of the co-owners of the building, who is residing on the ground floor.
“Moreover, the owners also owe around Rs4.5 lakh property tax to the corporation, of which I have paid my part but do not get cooperation from family members,” said Shah.
It should be noted that a part of the buildings tumbled down last Saturday and one of the owners, Harshad Mehta was saved miraculously in the accident. “We have tried to convince Mehta couple to vacate the house as it poses danger to their life but they are not cooperating,” claimed Shah.
