Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and US President Barack Obama today showered effusive praise on each other during their meeting here with the US leader "very much" commending Singh's "sincere" and "relentless" desire to work towards reducing tensions with Pakistan.

On his part, Singh called Obama a "personal friend and a charismatic leader who has made a deep imprint on world affairs".

After holding bilateral talks at the Hyderabad House here, Obama, at a joint press conference, called Singh his "friend" and thanked the Prime Minister and his wife Gursharan Kaur for the "gracious hospitality" and the "wonderful dinner" they hosted last night in honour of him and his wife Michelle.

77-year-old Singh said, "I welcome the President as a personal friend and a charismatic leader who has made a deep imprint on world affairs through his inclusive vision of peace, security and welfare for all peoples and nations."

The president and the first lady have made an abiding impression on the people of India, with their warmth, grace and commitment to promoting ties between our two great democracies, he said.

"I very much commend prime minister Singh's sincere and relentless (efforts) to engage and desire for peace in the region," the 49-year-old US President said.
