Nuclear forensics crucial for India, say experts

After every terror attack, one has to check whether there was any radioactivity present in the blast or not, say security experts. This is especially true for a country like India which is prone to the terror attacks.

Thus the upcoming field of nuclear forensics, which helps to determine the presence of the radioactivity in the attack, is of great significance for India.

Talking to DNA, nuclear forensic expert and nuclear detective, Husain Mehdi told that nuclear forensics was the need of the hour and had widespread applications in crime detection.

Mehdi said that a minute analysis of the even the fingerprints can establish a lot about the criminal's identity.

"Detection of specific radionuclides can be traced back to either natural events or to human activities such as 'dirty' bombs, power plant leaks or failures and weapons testing," he said.

Talking about the Fukushima nuclear leakage, Mehdi said that the situation would have been very serious if the Japan government had not taken action to cool down the reactors at regular time intervals. He also said that the world should learn from the Fukushima disaster and try to take all security measures during a similar situation.
