Amid growing Chinese footprints in Sri Lanka, India today made it clear that its deepening bilateral relations with Colombo need not be at the cost of other nations.

"The relationship between India and Sri Lanka need not be at the cost of other countries. Sri Lanka's relationships with other countries depends upon Sri Lanka itself and we respect that," external affairs minister SM Krishna told reporters without naming any country.

Responding to query on whether India was worried by increased Chinese presence in the country, Krishna said New Delhi was only desiring a prosperous Sri Lanka.

"Our ultimate objective is to see a prosperous, stable Sri Lanka at peace with itself," said Krishna, who on his second day of the four-day official visit to the country.

Krishna and his Sri Lankan counterpart GL Peiris were speaking after the conclusion of the 7th Indo-Sri Lanka Joint Commission talks after which India extended more than $416 million as Line of Credit for building three railway projects in this country.

The Line of Credit is being extended for three projects -- Omanthai-Pallai, Madu Road-Talaimannar and Medawachchiya-Madu Road.

China is investing nearly $1 billion over the next few years in developing the strategic Hambantota Port in Southern Sri Lanka.

Krishna, who met Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse earlier in the day, said Colombo's ties with any other nation would not affect the "historic relations" between the two neighbours.

At the same time, Krishna said it was up to Sri Lanka to decide on its external relations.

Analysts have said China's huge investments in Sri Lanka could be part of its plan to increse its presence in India's backyard.

Krishna had earlier told Parliament in August that China was "showing more than normal interest in Indian Ocean affairs".
