Congress today sought to turn the tables on the BJP over Nitin Gadkari's demand that Prime Ministerial candidates should be elected to the Lok Sabha, saying it was aimed at internal politics in his party.

"I think if you go into the statement in-depth, it clearly is targeted somewhere else, possibly on the internal politics of the BJP itself," party spokesperson Manish Tewari told reporters.

He ignored Gadkari's criticism of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for not being a member of the Lok Sabha and insisted that his remarks implied that there were "too many" PM candidates in the BJP which the party chief was trying to restrict by talking about the "winnability factor".

Besides, Tewari wondered, "Is it their (BJP) position that the Rajya Sabha should be dissolved or is it their position that people elected to the Upper House do not enjoy an equal status as Members of Parliament."
