A student of the National Institute of Design (NID) has put forth design concepts that will now be up for viewing to designers from across the country. Yogesh Chaudhary, a student of NID (Gandhinagar), has won the 'Emerging designer of the year' award at a contest organised by the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI). His designs will be displayed at the 'Van Heusen India Mens Week 2010' in New Delhi.

Chaudhary, a 3rd semester student of Apparel Design and Merchandising at NID Gandhinagar, is one of two young designers to win the FDCI's 'Van Heusen Emerging Designer 2010' contest. FDCI is a leading fashion organisation in the country that also organises the India Fashion Week (IFW) along with Wills Lifestyle. FDCI was also recently commissioned by the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations to organize a SAARC fashion show.

Speaking about the achievement, Chaudhary said, "This is a very important achievement for me. Recognition from the FDCI is like being elevated by one level. " He added, "It was the support of my classmates, teachers and the NID administration that enabled me to participate in the contest and win it."

Chaudhary had submitted three concepts of fashion wear, as demanded by the guidelines of the competition. He said, "I have taken the colors and patterns of clothes of different nomadic tribes across the world, as the base for my designs in urban wear. The design makes an attempt to influence today's modernity with the vibrating power of ancient times and traditions," he said, adding that he has used lots of knitwear in his concepts.

After his selection as the young designer of the year, which was communicated through an email from the organisers, Chaudhary is now busy executing his concepts on actual garments. The garments will be displayed in Delhi on August 28 at a special show.

Amit Sinha, NID faculty and the co-ordinator of their department of Apparel Design and Merchandising (FDM), said, "This is a big achievement for the student. This is probably the first time an NID student has bagged this award. Such a platform is very important for those looking for a career in fashion design."
