In a major development that could dash former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa’s hopes of reinstatement as the chief minister, the Central Empowered Committee appointed by the Supreme Court has recommended further probe into the alleged kickbacks received by Yeddyurappa’s family members from a mining company.

The report in effect means there is strong grounds for the Supreme Court to order a further probe from CBI or the CEC itself into the alleged role of Yeddyurappa in the illegal mining scam.

The report coming on the eve of Yeddyurappa’s breakfast meeting with BJP MLAs to chart his future strategies to regain the Chief Minister’s post is expected to deliver a severe jolt to his plans. However, Yeddurappa has decided to go ahead with his breakfast meeting on Friday which would be followed by a luncheon meeting at minor irrigation minister Govind Karajol’s residence in the afternoon.

CEC which investigated the petition filed by  The Samaj Parivartan Samudai into the alleged kickbacks paid by a mining baron, Praveen Chandra has noted that  the state government had through a  letter dated 30.9.2009 recommended to the Government of India for grant of a mining lease.

After obtaining the prior approval of the Central Government, the Notification dated 12.10.2010 has been issued by the Government of Karnataka for grant of the said mining lease. Praveen Chandra, the lessee, has made two payments, one of Rs. 2.5 crores to M/s Bhagat Homes Pvt. Ltd. and the other of Rs.3.5 crores to M/s Dhavalagir Property Developers Private Ltd and which are shown in the balance sheets of these two companies. The Directors of these two companies are close family members/relatives of the then Chief Minister of Karnataka, Yeddyurappa.

The CEC has further stated that the matter needs to be investigated in public interest.

Though the CEC has not mentioned the name of the agency for further investigation, head of Samaj Parivarthan Samudai, SR Hiremath speaking to DNA  expressed the confidence that his plea for a CBI probe would be upheld by the Supreme Court on March 13, when the court is expected to deliver its order.
