Bringing a new twist to the controversy of former Gujarat home minister Haren Pandya murder case, the state government has informed the Gujarat high court that some important development has taken place which it wants to point out to the court during the hearing of the appeal of the case. However, the government refused to reveal anything about the development.

In a letter dated March 28, 2011 written by the Public Prosecutor Prakash Jani, the state also sought to place on record all the details regarding the development of the case in a sealed envelope and requested that it be kept in the custody of the registrar general.

When Jani was asked about the development in the case, he told DNA, "the letter was written to the registrar of the court. As the details of the development are kept in a sealed envelope for the consideration of the court, it is not known to anyone."

The letter was produced before the court on Monday by additional advocate general Tushar Mehta before the division bench of justice Ravi Tripathi and justice PP Bhatt. After receiving the letter, the division bench asked Mehta to give a copy of it to advocates appearing for other parties in the case.

However, Yogesh Ravani, advocate for CBI said, "I have heard about the letter but we have not yet received its copy yet. The case is due for hearing on April 1."

Since the last seven years, the case has gone through several twists and turns, the latest one being the letter of Pandya's wife Jagruti to Modi requesting him to call for reinvestigation of the case. In the letter dated September 2, Jagruti had referred to the statement of Azam Khan, one of the witnesses in the Sohrabuddin Shaikh fake encounter case to CBI, who had stated that Chudasma had promised Sohrabuddin that he would save him in the Haren Pandya murder case, she alleged.

Pandya was murdered outside Law Garden on March 2003 when he had gone for a morning walk. Investigations in the case were handed over to CBI which arrested the killers.
