In a bid to evolve and keep pace with the latest trends and developments, the academic curriculum of National Institute of Design (NID), the country's top design institute will be revamped this year. While NID has already started the process of re-looking into the curriculum of its various disciplines, the revamped courses will be introduced from the academic year 2011-12.

Speaking on the need to review the courses, NID director Pradyumna Vyas said, "Some of the courses that we have are as many as 15 years old, and need a review to make them more relevant in the present scenario."

The institute has formed an academic reform committee which comprises various faculty and course coordinators of the institute, to mobilise change in the content of the courses. While the institute is consulting various alumni, it is also taking feedback from industries, on different aspects of NID's output.
Vyas said, "The institute's alumni working in various sectors will help us understand the present market scenario better. We are also taking into consideration the feedback that we have received from industry insiders, to understand the areas where we can improve so that we could bring appropriate changes in the courses."

The institute is also considering adopting a more systematic way of diversifying students' expertise and skills. Vyas said, "We are also looking into the possibility of introducing a system where students could choose an elective specialisation along with their main specialisation."

Talking about other changes to be brought into the institute, Vyas said, "While we will be streamlining the institute's admission process, we are looking to include newer disciplines as well."
