BJP leader Smriti Irani today said the country has never seen such a helpless prime minister who admits he is unable to feed 40% of the population when food grains are rotting away in the godowns.

"The prime minister says he is helpless even as thousands of tonnes of food grains rot away in the godowns. He admits he is unable to feed 40% of the population. Indian democracy has never seen such a helpless prime minister," Irani, on a tour to the Northeast states, said in Shillong.

Referring to the financial scams in Assam’s North Cachar Hills District Council, Arunachal’s public distribution system and that of the municipal council in Manipur, she said the states which are ruled by Congress were riddled with scams and affected by law and order problems, resulting in lack of development.

"When people are struggling to meet their basic needs, legislators of Meghalaya on supposed official tours to foreign countries slap bills of crores on the government exchequer. The Congress is widening the gap between the common man and the politicians," the president of BJP’s Mahila Morcha said.

Describing the law and order situation in the Northeast as worrisome, she referred to the attack on her convoy in Assam yesterday and said, "When people traveling in red light vehicles have to face such circumstances, imagine what will be the plight of the common man."

Claiming that there was an atmosphere of security in the BJP ruled states, Irani, however, expressed concern over the problem of defection affecting the party in the Northeast.
