Corporators in Ahmedabad use a variety of patriotic songs as their caller tunes on cellphones.
It seems our corporators have started imbibing the spirit of patriotism. For, when you call up any corporator of Ahmedabad, you can hear a very melodious patriotic caller tune on their mobile phones. These corporators want to set a niche for themselves in the minds of the public members by letting them know that they (corporators) love the country.
"It is important to have such a caller tune as a citizen looks up to the corporator in a respectful way,'' said Vinod Kantharia, Congress corporator from Raikhad ward.
However, Kantharia has different reasons to set the caller tune of 'Vande Mataram' sung by AR Rahman. He said that the song is his personal favourite and has been his caller tune for the last one-and-a-half years. "This song clearly signifies his devotion and patriotism towards the country. Even I consider my country first in every respect and that is why I use the caller tune," added Kantharia.
Many corporators believe that using patriotic songs as caller tunes helps in building their image.
Kantharia said that he has got appreciation from other corporators and also citizens.
Echoing similar opinion, corporator Amjad Khan Pathan from Rajpur ward said that such patriotic caller tunes create a good impression among people. "Also 'Ae maalik tere bande hum' is my favourite song and therefore my caller tune. I wanted people to look at me as a person of good virtues and hence this is just a step towards it."
Corporator from Behrampura ward, Shakeel Shaikh, uses the caller tune of 'Ae mere watan ke logon'. "I think the one who calls me should know my personality facets before talking to me. With such caller tune, my patriotic spirits get lifted as I work for the country," said Shaikh.
Kamla Chavda, also from Behrampura, has got 'Zindagi har kadam, Ek Nayi Jung hai' set as the caller tune on her cellphone.
While many of the corporators see that the caller tune helps them build their image and indicate their personality, corporator Razia Rangrej from Danilimda ward sees it as a way of entertainment.
"I had the caller tune of 'Mere desh ki dharti' but recently my kid changed it to a new Bollywood song. I had just set the patriotic song on my cellphone for the simple reason that I like the song," said Rangrej.
