Sardarnagar police officials in hot pursuit of a suspected hooch-related death were on a high, till it left them with a bad hangover when the suspect was found to have died a natural death and the mad chase fizzled out.

According to police sources, the deceased Rajubhai Gohil, 52, a resident of Ambicanagar in Amraiwadi area, was travelling in an auto rickshaw from the Sardarnagar area when he developed chest pain. Sources said that Gohil had suffered a massive heart attack and died in the rickshaw itself. Gohil’s body was later taken to the Civil hospital for post-mortem on Saturday night and police asked the hospital authority to take sample of blood, urine and saliva in case of death from consuming hooch which was sent to FSL for further investigation.

Sources in the Kubernagar area said that police conducted raid in the area early in the morning after the suspected death was reported. Security was also beefed up in the area, sources said.

Incidentally, police also nabbed Vinod Lalubhai Bhil, 56, who was accompanying Gohil and was also in an inebriated state. Looking at their drunken state, police believed the deaths to be outcome of hooch consumption. However, when Gohil’s death was declared to be a result of fatal heart attack, officials said that the death cannot be presumed to have been an outcome of consuming spurious liquor.

A police official said, “If the duo had consumed hooch, it cannot be said that it was spurious in nature or contained methyl alcohol as the effect would have been equal on both of them. Since the arrested person is alive, the death of Rajubhai Gohil cannot be said to be a result of consumption of spurious liquor.”

8-day police remand for constable duo
Two constables from Kagdapith police station who were arrested by the crime branch in connection with the recent hooch tragedy was sent to eight day police remand till August 10. The crime branch pleaded time for remand as they still had to interrogate the duo — Ranajitsinh Dabhi and Balwant Desai — who they suspect had a partnership with the two main accused in the hooch tragedy, Vinod Dagari and Dadu Chara. The two constables had allegedly facilitated a meeting between the two main accused besides having information from where Dagri and Dadu Chara purchased the methyl alcohol.  More arrests of police personnel likely.
