Naroda Patia case witness deposes against Maya Ben Kodnani

Bashir Khan Nanhe Khan Mansuri, a witness and survivor of the Naroda Patia massacre case, made his deposition before the designated court of judge Jyotsna Ben Yagnik. She is looking after the Naroda Patia case where Mansuri claims to have seen Naroda MLA, Maya Ben Kodnani instigating the mob and talking to police personnel.

Though none of Mansuri's family members were killed in the rampage, the rioters had set ablaze his shop and he had suffered loss of property to the tune of more than Rs 5 lakh.

Mansuri, making his deposition before the court, said that on the day of the incident on February 28, 2002, he heard that there was communal tension in the city in the wake of the Sabarmati train burning incident and a mob had assembled at Naroda area. On reaching Natraj Hotel, Mansuri saw a mob comprising mostly Hindus assembled there and pelting stones on shops and establishments of the minority community.

Mansuri in his deposition also said that while he was standing near the spot, he saw Maya Ben Kodnani reaching there and after talking to police who were already deployed at the place, she left the spot. Minutes later Kodnani left, the police at the site started firing in the air. At the same time, one Bipin Autowallah started firing on the Muslim mob with his revolver and a Suresh Langda, began pelting stones. Mansuri stated that in the firing, Maksood died on the spot from bullet injuries while he and another person, Abid, sustained severe wounds.

Mansuri also stated that he had twice made his deposition, once at Naroda police station and then before the crime branch officials, but his statements were not recorded correctly.
