The newly-built Maninagar Medical College at LG Hospital was inaugurated by chief minister Narendra Modi on Saturday. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony Modi alleged of 'conspiracy' against the state in matters of allocation of medical seats.

As a result of this 'conspiracy', parents are forced to pay crores of rupees as capitation fees to medical colleges in other states to secure admission for their children in medical colleges.

Continuing his 'conspiracy' theory, Modi said that even if a Gujarat student secures more than 90%, he/she fails to get admission in state's medical colleges, because Gujarat doesn't have enough seats.

As a result, middle class families of the state have to pay almost Rs1,200 crore every year as capitation fees to colleges in other states. "We want to stop this money being routed to other states by increasing the number of medical colleges across Gujarat," said Modi.

The chief minister also blamed previous state governments for not doing enough to get Gujarat more seats.

Modi further said that building new medical colleges is a costly affair, but they will eventually produce enough numbers of doctors who will serve the poor of the state in coming years. Praising the 108 ambulance service, Modi said that it has revolutionised the state's health emergency services.

The chief minister also gave details of a unique initiative started by 105 government hospitals across the state. Under the initiative, each of these hospitals will have a small library for patients, from where they can borrow books during their visit or stay in the hospital.

"We want both body and mind to be happy. Books can be very useful to generate positivity among patients" stated Modi.
In a bid to improve the healthcare sector, Modi also said that the government is also planning to manufacture medical equipment in the state.

"We have also signed MoUs with companies to manufacture and conduct research activities in that field," he said. Speaking on the occasion, state health minister Jaynarayan Vyas assured that within three years, the number of medical seats in Ahmedabad alone will be higher than the rest of the state counted together.

"Currently we have 550 seats, and we want to add 300 more in very near future," Vyas also assured that VS Hospital will have world class services with 2,800 beds in the near future.
State revenue minister Anandiben Patel, MP Kirit Solanki, Ahmedabad mayor Asit Vora and municipal commissioner IP Gautam were present on the occasion.
