Support is pouring in for veteran Gandhian and activist Anna Hazare, who was arrested by Delhi Police on Tuesday morning, from across the country and the state, but the Gujarat government has surprisingly gone silent about it. No official reaction, no statement, nothing.

Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who has on several occasions openly supported Anna Hazare's anti-corruption drive, too preferred to remain silent about the biggest news of the day.

This was just a day after Modi's tweet accusing the Congress of adopting double standards by declaring Anna as corrupt.

This was not the first time Modi had spoken in support of Hazare's campaign, as he has done so on several occasion in the recent months. But, not a word on Tuesday.

The CM's publicity managers confirmed that he did not plan to make any reaction about the arrest of Anna. This was even as BJP president Nitin Gadkari announced that the party would launch a nationwide protest from Wednesday against dictatorship of the Congress-led UPA government.

"The CM's silence is surprising, considering that corruption is at the centre of Anna's agenda. But, only the CM can say why he hasn't reacted to the development," conceded a senior minister in the Modi cabinet.

The Sachivalaya was also abuzz with the news about the arrest of Anna and other civil society members.

Most of the ministers and officers were glued to TV sets to keep track of the development. Its possible implications were also widely discussed and debated in the powers of corridor during the day.

"Anna Hazare's movement is a wave. He doesn't have committed followers which even someone like Baba Ramdev has. Let us see, how long the campaign goes on, and whether it can generate public support like it did the previous time," said a senior minister requesting anonymity. Another minister, considered close to the CM said that Anna's arrest was a mistake.
