As the first phase of census operation began in Nagaland from June 1, the state government appealed to people to cooperate with the enumerators by furnishing required information.

In a fresh notification, chief secretary Lalthara today asked the people to furnish accurate and clear facts and figures in reply to questions fielded by census enumerators.

The notification cautioned that failure to comply would invite penalties as prescribed under Section 11 of the Census Act 1948.

Any person intentionally giving a false answer or refusing to answer to the best of his knowledge or belief, or any person occupying any house, enclosure, 'vessel or other place' and refusing to allow a census officer entry is liable to prosecution under the said act.

Penalties might also be slapped on any person who "removes, obliterates, alters or damages any letters, marks or numbers", painted or affixed for the purposes of the census.

The notification cautioned that any person who fails to comply with the Census Act would be punishable with a fine, which may extend to Rs1,000.

The move follows reports in some parts of the state the people have refused to cooperate with census officials on flimsy grounds, according to officials.
