With strong indications of Indian Mujahideen’s involvement in the Mumbai serial blasts, the National Investigation Agency is gathering inputs of IM and SIMI men who were recently arrested in various states.

Agencies have strong suspicion that sleeper cells of the banned SIMI helped in the Mumbai bombings. Acting on information from Danish Riyaz, an active member of Simi  who was arrested by the Vadodara police last month, the NIA raided his residence in Ranchi and that of his close associate Manzar Imamuddin. Agencies believe Imamuddin is an Indian Mujahideen operative.

Riyaz, a resident of Jharkhand, is allegedly an active member of the Student Islamic Movement of India (Simi ) and figures in the Intelligence Bureau’s (IB’s) list of wanted suspects.

Intelligence agencies claim SIMI is also trying to resurrect its image. The outfit’s former all-India president Sainudeen Sainalabudeen was arrested from the Kochi airport on June 25 while returning from Dubai.

A number of cases are pending against Sainalabudeen and agencies suspect he developed connections with international jihadi groups during his stay in Dubai.

Earlier on June 13, the Madhya Pradesh anti-terrorist squad (ATS) arrested 10 Simi activists from Khandwa who were allegedly planning terror strikes.

Four pistols and 12 live cartridges as well as 24 CDs were also recovered from their possession. Subsequently, the Gujarat police arrested Dannish Riyaz.

“We have learnt that Riyaz had provided shelter to IM militants, Abdus Subhan alias Taqueer, Abdul Raziq and Mujib Shaikh. In fact, we have also learnt that Riyaz has recruited about 20-25 youth to use them as sleeper cells for IM’s next operation,” an NIA official said.
