After West Bengal, the second multi-modal aerotropolis will come up at Rajasthan's Jaipur city as the government has given 'in principle' approval for the setting up of a new greenfield airport there.

"Government has granted 'in principle' approval to the proposal of Rajasthan Aviation Infrastructure Pvt Ltd (RAIPL) for setting up of a new greenfield airport in Viratnagar in Rajasthan's Jaipur district last month," a senior official said.

Civil aviation minister Praful Patel recently said the promoter RAIPL has informed the ministry that "the construction of the airport at Viratnagar will be started on completion of necessary formalities with the state government."

This is the second aerotropolis or airport city which is proposed to come up in the country. Work on the first such project being built by Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Ltd at Durgapur is likely to begin in April.

At Viratnagar, the first phase of the Rs4,000 crore project, which is part of the early bird projects under Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC), is expected to be ready by 2014.

The project has already received necessary approvals from Defence, Finance and Home ministries and RAIPL would begin the work once it gets the nod from the state government. The 3,000-acre aerotropolis area, which currently is a completely barren location, would be developed into a global trans-shipment hub. The Planning Commission has also suggested the national capital region for development of an international cargo hub.

The aerotropolis would be connected to the international airport, national highway no 8 (Delhi-Jaipur), railway line and sea-port through dedicated freight corridor.

RAIPL would develop the world-class facility in association with Germany's FRAPORT. The airport would have two runways and could handle the most commonly used freighter aircraft.

Besides cargo, it would also provide an alternative to congested airports like Delhi. A number of flights get diverted to Jaipur due to poor visibility at Delhi's IGI airport during fog season, but due to its size it could handle only a few.

The RAIPL had submitted its proposal to the steering committee of the civil aviation ministry, which gave a go ahead to the proposal for setting up of a new greenfield airport in Viratnagar, which is about 40km from the Pink City.

The company is currently looking for some low cost budget from Japanese banks, which are involved in the DMIC projects.
