Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav may be battling his one time friend Amar Singh, but he continues to bat for people like Anil Ambani, considered close to Amar Singh. Yadav has written to prime minister Manmohan Singh to protest the appointment of former NTPC chairman DV Kapur to the advisory committee of the ministry of power.

In his missive to Manmohan Singh, the Samajwadi chief has made the point that “the appointment of Dr DV Kapur is against the interests of the power sector as it raises serious issues of conflict of interest”. Yadav has pointed out that Kapur is a  director of Reliance Industries, and “has been working with Reliance Industries on various assignments... enjoying various perks including a chauffeur-driven car, and rent for his own posh residence provided by the company”.

The SP chief has also pointed out that Kapur has been representing RIL in the company’s negotiations with NTPC for supply of gas to NTPC’s Kawas & Gandhar expansion projects. “With such serious conflict of interests he should not be placed in such an important advisory position as he will end up serving the interests of Reliance Industries and its promoters and influence the decision-making process of the government,” he said.

The timing of Mulayam Singh Yadav’s letter to the Prime Minister is equally if not more significant than the letter itself. It comes at a time when he has fallen out with Amar Singh, who had introduced him to the corporate world and was instrumental in drawing Anil Ambani and Amitabh Bachhan into Yadav’s inner circle. Now that the two have fallen out, there is considerable speculation about whose side the corporate world will take.

By targeting RIL, the SP Chief is also sending out a clear message to friends in the corporate world, that he is prepared for an equation with them, even without Amar Singh.
