Congress leader and former Union minister Shankarsinh Vaghela said here on Sunday that neither the central government nor his party wanted to disturb the BJP government in the state by using Article 356 of the constitution.

Replying to a query from this reporter at his meet with the local media, Vaghela, who had come here on a day’s visit for a social function, said that his party and the UPA govt would go only by the rule of law and court verdict in the Godhara and post-Godhara riot cases, now being examined by the supreme court-appointed special investigation team (SIT).

Asked what would be the course of law if the SIT found chief minister Narendra Modi and his other ministers guilty, Vaghela said in that case SIT would be required to file a formal FIR against the accused, which would naturally result in the reconstitution of
government by the saffron party.

Reiterating his demand for the cross-examination and narco test of chief minister Modi and his ministerial colleagues, Vaghela said that the SIT should press for it, so that the truth could come out. “When Modi appointed the Nanavati commission, he volunteered  for such an examination, but he was now opposing such a move. This is double standard,” Vaghela said, adding that the SIT must also probe at whose instance the police control room was controlled by the then ministers instead of police officers.

On the proposal to hand over the district hospital, built with grants from the Prime Minister’s funds after the Kutch quake in 2001, to the Adani group for running the hospital as well a medical college, he said it was contrary to the decision taken by his government for setting up of a government medical college and hospital. He pointed out that even though the central government had funded the hospital, it has not been consulted by the state government on the proposal. He, however, said he was not against the new arrangement with the private party, but the people of Kutch must ensure that no capitation fee was charged for admission from Kutchis.

He also opposed the idea of a foreign party running a port in Kutch because it was a sensitive border area, and gochur (pasture land) being given to industries at a throwaway price.
