As his battery of lawyers are working overtime to present an argument to grant bail, the jailed mining baron G Janardana Reddy stands in queue in the Chanchalguda central prison waiting for his turn to get his lunch and dinner.

Reddy, the owner of Obulapuram Minining Company (OMC), and BV Srinivas Reddy, the managing director of OMC and GJ Reddy’s brother-in-law, are among about 700 inmates in the prison, which normally houses offenders including pick pockets and wife-beaters.

However, the Satyam scam accused B Ramalinga Raju, his brother B Rama Raju and six other once-high profile executives of the IT company, too are lodged in the same prison. However, the senior Raju has been allotted a separate room with a facility to get a better diet following the court directions.

The mining don for now is getting the regular inmate food in the jail. The jail authorities provide about 600 gm of rice, the staple in South India, 100 gm of dal and 250 gm of vegetables. The Reddys’ were provided kichdi for breakfast on Tuesday.

The Reddys had to spend the Monday night along with three more inmates in the admission block of the jail since the authorities are yet to provide him a cell though the accused in illegal iron ore mining were numbered immediately after admission.

According to sources, the mining baron, who had allegedly spent his nights on imported mattresses and gold plated beds, had to sleep on the floor with another piece of cloth covering him. According to the jail rules, he has to clean his plate and glass himself.

“The accused can seek priority treatment when they file their counter in the court. That’s how Ramalinga Raju was provided a separate cell and allowed to get his own food on health grounds,” a source explained.

Meanwhile, Janardana Reddy and Srinivas Reddy have moved the CBI court for bail. The bail application will come up for hearing on Wednesday. The CBI is also expected to file its counter.

However, the CBI is trying to delink the case that is pending in the Supreme Court from the one that is currently being investigated.
