UK Bansal, currently a secretary (internal security) in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), will be the next Border Security Force (BSF) chief. Bansal, an IPS officer of 1974 batch from UP cadre, will take over the charge from Raman Srivastava who retires on October 31.
The change, however, has left the home ministry gasping to search for an experienced hand to deal with the key portfolio of internal security, which in the current scenario is rated as the most important post in the home ministry after the union home secretary.
Besides dealing with all terror and internal security related matters, the special secretary (internal security) is also the key person for home ministry’s ambitious projects such as the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), the National Intelligence Grid (Natgrid), and the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (CCTNS).
“Some names are doing the rounds for the post of special secretary (internal security) but it would be difficult to get an officer of the similar experience and reputation,” a senior home ministry official confided.
So far the home ministry has been able to make a list of about six-seven officers who could be a valid replacement of the outgoing secretary (internal security) but adding to its dilemma is the reluctance many to come because of home minister P Chidamabram’s reputation of being a hard taskmaster and a no-nonsense man.
The probables include Director General of Tihar Jail Neeraj Kumar, Special DG in CRPF Subhash Joshi, secretary security in the cabinet secretariat Pranay Sahay and NIA’s Special DG Prakash Mishra.
However, many officers think it would be better to get a posting in a paramilitary force or even in the National Police Academy, an official said.
