Union home ministry has asked all agencies, especially those coming under the control of defence ministry, to carry out proper checks before sharing any intelligence.

Senior home ministry officials conveyed this to various agencies including the directorate general of military intelligence (DGMI) and defence intelligence agency (DIA), coming under the defence ministry.

The DGMI had issued a warning about a threat to World Badminton Championship at Hyderabad stating that Lashker-e-Taiba was planning to carry out attacks during the tournament.

While the warning from DGMI prompted England to pull out, the source said the coordinates provided by the defence intelligence spy agency did not match.

A detailed enquiry later found that what was conveyed as a technical intelligence was basically an information given by a vague source which was not even corroborated.

Another information provided by DIA was about the presence of seven Lashker militants in the national capital, prompting Delhi police to be on red alert.

However, this intelligence input was also found to be unsubstantiated and even the source of the information was not mentioned by the DIA, they said.

Meanwhile, Union home secretary GK Pillai has written to all state police chiefs asking them to exercise restraint while talking to media especially about terror-related crimes.
